Bike Trip: April 9th - 17th

Estimate: 6,388.1 miles

Planning stages: Stops and Milestones

This is the preparation phase of the trip. First off, map out the trip then provide a list if estimated goals so that I can see if I'm keeping on the schedule. I'm estimating breaks every 2 hours or so but I'm also moving them closer to locations where I'm likely to get gas. I don't want to have a break right at 8am on the side of the road.

So this is the first step. The map (pictured above) and the first table of estimated times. I've made notes if there's anything I want to be aware of. Also note that on the map, the red "GR" indicate the estimated gas and rest stops as listed below.

I have additional routes I'll be able to consider. Depending on the available time, these routes are options.

Inventory

The next step is to create a checklist of gear I'm taking along. This gear inventory will be used when I'm packing up the bike on Thursday.

Bike Preparation

Before heading out, I'm going to have to check the service manual and make necessary changes. In particular, I'll change the oil, clean and adjust the chain, wash and wax the bike. I have a couple of pre-ride mechanical items I'll be trying to do. Change the rear brake line with a braided one. Add ThrottleMeister bar ends.

Load Testing

This past Saturday I packed up the bags with most everything and found that the tailbag is pretty heavy and that the clothes on the left side is heavier than the misc stuff on the right. So I moved the first aid kit and the tank bag cover to the right side saddlebag. The weight's a bit better. I also moved some stuff from the tail bag to the tank bag.

I also positioned my helmet speakers to be inside the foam and appropriately placed next to my ears for correct listening.

On Sunday I positioned the bags (mostly unpacked) on the bike to see where things fall. With my current weight loss, my ride should be even better. I took the bike out for a ride to see how it all works and it seems to work quite well.

Gear

I've ordered some additional gear for the bike including a Boostaroo, an in-line speaker booster. A braided brake line. Replacement footpegs to give my legs more room (I removed the rubber from the stock ones but I don't think the ride will be as good without the support).

Daily Log

I've setup a web page for driving updates. Rita will be calling me periodically to make sure I'm ok. She'll be able to easily update the web page with my location on the trip. Feel free to keep an eye on the page.

Health

I've been working out at the gym, gaining muscle and tightening up myself. I've dropped lots of weight and am mentally prepared for this trip. I don't expect this to be a problem.
